There is a theory (sorry to say, I think this originated in the 
psychoanalytic community, but it rings true, nonetheless) that a 
surgeon is someone with strong sadistic tendencies who dealt with 
that aspect of his or her nature by seeking a socially acceptable 
outlet for it. In other words, the surgeon helps people and perform 
a valuable service to society, but the underlying sadism is still 
there, nonetheless, and sometimes may affect the physician's 
judgement and behavior. The now outlawed psychosurgical techniques 
such as lonotmmies which were once used to deliberately turn people 
into vegetables is an egregious example of this.
