In the Bible, when the Children of Israel first came to Canaan during the
Exodus, they found a settled land. Acording to that account, many of
these peoples were destroyed (as in Jerico). One group that was never
subdued were the Philistines, who lived along the coast. They defeated
Saul, the first king of Israel and co-existed during the Kingdom Period
of David. My understanding is that the name Palestine in a corruption of
Philistine.

We also know that when the Northern Kingdom of Israel was conquered and
exiled by the Assyrians, they in turn brought numerous subjects from
other conquests to that land to fill in the gap. that was the assyrian
policy, to mix up and spread out their conquered subjects to lessen the
chance of uprising. These new settlers, a rather mixed lot, came to known
as the Samaritans. These are the people who were so despised in Jesus'
day. When the Diaspora occured, these people inherited the land. They
became the Palestinians along with what ever Philistinians and other
original Canaanites remained. It would be interesting to find out when
the term Samaritan went out of use in favor of Palestinian. But they are
the same people. This is also the basis for why they have never been
fully accepted by the other Arabs. They are concidered interlopers by
everyone, Jew and Arab alike.

At least that's my understanding.
