A REDISCOVERY and a CONFIRMATION of LEGEND "ADAM'S BRIDGE"

Re: Ancient Bridge of over 30 miles between India and Ceylon.

Dear Friends:

When I went to school about 70 years ago, the Geography of Asia showed
this link of many low islands and shoals between India and Ceylon and
named it then "Adam's Bridge." So this is an additional confirmation
of an old Legend. These two lands are about 20 miles apart at that
point.

Legend has it that modern day Ceylon is the northern portion of
ancient Lanka (S D II 332)

The actual cycle and period when King Rama (of the Silver --chandra --
dynasty, the Chandravansa) ruled India is said to be around the end of
the Treta Yuga.

The intervening period of about 864,000 years (Dvapara Yuga) makes
this event about 890,000 years ago. This apparently relates to the
period of the Atlanteans.


DESTRUCTION OF ATLANTIS MAIN CONTINENT AND ISLANDS

The SECRET DOCTRINE speaks of DAITYA (destroyed about 270,000 years
ago (S D I 651; II 141, 314fn, 433, 710, 740); and,

the still older section named RUTA said to have sunk In the
Pleistocene age 850,000 years ago (S D I 650; II 141, 147, 314fn,
433, 710).

The last large island remnant of Atlantis, "POSEIDONIS" (Solon's
island -- S D II 436) was said to have sunk 9,614 BC -- (MAHATMA
LETTERS p. 155).

The geology of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) shows that it belonged to a much
larger piece of land and this was apparently swallowed up in the
southern Indian ocean ages ago.

There is to be found in the Newara-Eliya highlands of Ceylon (over
8.000 feet high an abrupt scarp almost vertical, about 15 miles long,
and 5,000 feet high called "THE END OF THE WORLD." It presents
aspects of a shearing of the land and rock by some enormous force,
and is unexplained. The scarp ends after some gaps, in the well known
and much visited "Adam's Leap."

Turning back to the legend of King Rama: His wife Sita was abducted
by King Ravana (the "demon giant king") of ancient Lanka.

Pursuit and recruitment of armies among men and animals followed, and
the intelligent animals (such as the monkeys and apes lead by Hanuman
and King Sugriva) assisted King Rama, and participated in the building
of the "bridge," to Lanka so legend says.

It is of course possible (if modern dating is accurate) that the
man-made "bridge" was still older than the 890,000 years Indian
legends give to it.

It would then be one of the largest man-made structures for which we
have evidence that is acknowledged as being made in the remote past.
The Great Wall of china is longer but was constructed in the last
thousand years.

The great Rock Cave carvings of Ellora and Ajanta in India -- as
examples out of thousands that dot the country, such as Kenhari,
Pandulena, Karli, Jog, Bhag, Badja, Jogeshwari, etc.. have been carved
out of the mountains to serve as libraries, universities, refuges for
the wise.

We find, for instance that H P B in The SECRET DOCTRINE [ II 430-1 ]
surveys the records of significant antiquities, including Ankor Wat,
(which she calls the second most sacred edifice that remains of the
most ancient Lodge of Teachers, built at a time when the great islands
and continents in the Pacific were in their last stages of being
submerged), the Pyramids of Egypt and Central America, and the
remains found in Peru (Tiahuanaco) of an anti-diluvian civilization.

If one has a copy of Sister Nevedita's CRADLE TALES OF HINDUISM (
Advaita Ashrama, or Vedanta Press) the whole legend of the Ramayana is
retold. (Originally published by: LONGMANS GREEN, London, 1917).

The RAMAYANA dance-legend-drama is based on it and is a matter for
continual entertainment around rural India to this day.

There is a wonderful poem, narrative, I think still in print called
the DREAM OF RAVAN which was published around 1853 by the Dublin
University Magazine. It gives some insights into the psychological
meaning of this legend and event. (Possibly available from U L T in

In this epic, there is a mentioning about a bridge, which was built
between Rameshwaram (India) and the Sri Lankan coast under the
supervision of a dynamic and invincible figure called Rama who is
supposed to be the incarnation of [VISHNU] the supreme.

This information may not be of much importance to the archeologists
who are interested in exploring the origins of man, but it is sure to
open the spiritual gates of the people of the world to have come to
know an ancient history linked to the Indian mythology.
