That is your interpretation.

Consider it a different way. Consider that today's humanity is not the
result of one evolutionary path, but two. Unfortunately, Blavatsky
refers to the humans on both evolutionary paths by the same term. But
let's give them new names for clarity. We can divide them into the
non-reincarnating part of humans, which we'll call "bodies", and the
reincarnating principle of humans, which we'll call their "RP"'s.

Now, at no point is it even suggested that an RP can only reincarnate
in the body of one of it's previous body's descendents. Taking it a step
further, there is no reason why there should be ANY direct genetic link
between the body of an RP's current incarnation, and the body of its
previous incarnation; bodies with DNA themselves didn't exist until the
3rd root race, anyway. The physical descriptions for the 4th Root Race,
if the bodies were what we currently call "human," impossible unless the
laws of physics changed in relatively recent times. Therefore, the only
reasonable assupmtion (other than the SD being total bullshit) is that
the human bodies of the 3rd and 4th root races were NOT the sources of
the genetic material of the current human race; that they were
completely different species.

One of the things which is still a matter of controversy about
evolution was how benevolent mutations were passed on. There are a
number of conflicting theories on this. But, if one follows Blavatsky,
then the problem is explained; the mutations were not at all random, but
caused by RP's, as they evolved, attempting to create bodies that could
express them. When the bodies of the root races had reached their own
evolutionary peak, then new species had to be found that could contain
the RP's.

This also explains the concept of apes being descended from humans.
When the human RP's bred animal bodies to create bodies that could hold
them, apes were a failed result; not quite enough to hold the more
highly evolved human RP's. Neanderthal "Man" is a more modern example;
DNA evidence now shows that they are a cousin, not an anscestor, of
modern human bodies, a failed experiment by the human RP's.
