And not to forget, both HPB and Olcott were not in training for chelaship at
that time you mention in connection with the requirements for chelaship.
So applying the worldy as well as the pseudo theosophical standards may not
be the best for esoteric situations.
And smoking was never forbidden in the ashrams, only in the pseudo esoteric
E.S. of the Adyar lineage, as Boris de Zirkoff once described in a letter
which is in my possession (I have the original, so far as I know there are
no copies of it).
Just my thoughts when I was meditating about truth even within theosophical
circles.

Reminds me of the choice the Adepts made when they chose HPB and Olcott and
Judge.
HPB and Olcott were not vegetarians, both smoked and Olcott was a man of
the world at the time he was chosen. So applying the worldly standards may
not be the best in critical situations.
