Theosophy as History

Jan 13, 2002 09:51 AM
by Gerald Schueler

<<<THEOSOPHY is as I understand it a condensed report on the state of the Universe and of Man.

To a large extent it is HISTORY.>>>

If Theosophy proports to be history, then I am amazed that it has lasted as long as it has, although this would explain why there are so few members. If it claimed to be history, then there would be less memebrs, because I would leave. I have never thought of it as history, except maybe metaphorical or poetic or mythological. The SD cannot and should not be taken as a literal history any more than the Bible.

Theosophy as history is very suspect, and there is much evidence that would undermine such an idea, and Brigitte is only one of many scholars who are doing this. The SD as history is not demonstrable, and will likely never be accepted by any but the most hardened "faithful" (ie those who maintain faith in a literal interpretation in spite of all the contrary evidence).

Theosophy offers us a wonderful worldview, one that we can adopt and use today, without worrying about the past or the future.
