You are surely correct. And yet it seems to me that
training oneself to never attain final closure is at
least a partial antidote to this. If what to one
person is a belief is to another an interesting
hypothesis, tentatively held until it becomes clearly
untenable, and then gladly discarded in favor of
another hypothesis which is better, then it is
possible to learn until the end of life. I have
always suspected that there is such a thing as
reincarnation, the reason for it is that most people
will not learn anything unless made to die and forget
their belief systems. If one could remain forever
open then this would be unnecessary. Unfortunately,
avoiding beliefs altogether is impossible, as some
things are going to present themselves as self-evident
truths no matter how we train ourselves. Serge King
delineates three levels of belief, and says that this
is the one which shapes our experience of reality and
is therefore the most pernicious.
