Steve, you may be right about the word "ray," I don't know. But the idea of divinity self-manifesting can be found in ancient Egypt where the god Tmu was said to be self-manifesting. The idea of a self-manifesting divinity is equivalent to the idea of a causeless-cause. Both are necessary assumptions that we humans have to make in any attempt to explain creation.
