Hi, Frank:

I don't know how to take your question, but here are
some facts for your consideration:

The statement that Blavatsky used hash in New York is
made in Rawson's article in Frank Leslie's Popular
Monthly.

She wrote at length about synesthesia (the experience
of seeing sounds and hearing colors) and this is
described as one of the experiences one has using hash
in Baudelaire's Paradis Artificiel.

In his Old Diary Leaves, Olcott recounts a story of
seeing Blavatsky hold up a pencil, which then turned
into two pencils, and then more. The longer he
stared, the more pencils he saw. That seems to
indicate something was burning in the room which
produced sense distorting fumes.

Blavatsky says that her teacher was a smoker, and that
when she visited him at Darjeeling he was using a
device which sounds much like a water pipe.

In Isis she writes about a drink called Soma which the
Hindus used to drink for religious purposes (i.e., to
have hallucinations.) It seems reasonable to assert
that this drink contained some sort of drug,

Olcott frankly admits when he saw it rain in his room
and flowers appearing out of nowhere, there was
something burning which is not specified. He also
says he saw his visitors laughing at him through all
the smoke,

These and other statements seem to suggest there might
have been a chemical component to at least some of
these strange experiences.
