Dear Bart:
You still don't "get it" in regard to the U.L.T.
Its basis is the study of THEOSOPHY, and not ownership of some
management set-up, or of some property. It does not waste time
on such matters. I realize they are important to those who think
"organizations" are significant. To the ULTers they are not, so
they got rid of them from the outset. Read the DECLARATION of
the U.L.T.
U.L.T. does not require anything more than an open field or
someone's sitting room where a group of interested students can
assemble for STUDY.
Ownership of a hall or property gives NO CONTROL over any single
(or group) of associates who are all free volunteers.
THEOSOPHY COMPANY (or some other legal fiduciary, as required by
law) is used as a SERVANT of the U.L.T. If it (the U.L.T. ) has
to handle, in a legal fashion, finances and property donated by
those who desire to support it and perpetuate its work then a
legal "fiduciary" has to be provided, and as in the past some of
the students provide what is needed as a service.
In U.L.T. there is positively NO CENTRALIZING.
If any uniformity of direction is desired, it is (strangely in
our world) the TEACHINGS, and not any person, or even a group of
persons. No rites, rules or regulations are imposed. Associates
would laugh at them. If some facility for common work is denied,
or no .longer appropriate, then another is found, if needed.
There, the free associates can assemble (if they so desire) and
continue their work.
It is an attempt to create and perpetuate the free rule of
impersonality and universality. No one need accept it. There is
no advantage from such a situation or construct.
Look at our world, and at you and me, and strip off the veneer of
rules and of government or religious regulations.
What do you find? It is individual people who agree (whether
they are in one party, or nation, or of some one sex or age, or
again, of some religion or another, all of them, without
exception have made choices, either to be independent or to be
bound by some accepted code, the definitions of which they accept
(more or less). I say we all, in complete honesty and sincerity,
think independently and act independently regardless of what we
or they say they subscribe to and adopt. Look at your and my
actions -- they are always free. We choose them constantly as
we work our way through every day, in the past as in the present
and presumably, the future.
If we accept ready-made limits, (including ready-made
designations) then we do that FREELY. If we say we belong to
some division of humanity, or the race, or of creed, or color, it
is because we accept and adopt those ready-made definitions. And
yet, internally we are FOREVER FREE. We are the CHOOSERS. It is
the immortal spirit/soul in us that has NO Name that does this
and directs our body, brain and lower mind as a tool for its
manifestation, as a personality this incarnation.
The DECLARATION is the sole basis and it also says all that is
necessary for free people to use.
The only purpose of the U.L.T. is to keep H.P.Blavatsky's and
Judge's original writings alive and available -- so people can
check out the original teachings of THEOSOPHY and compare them
with all the flood of opinions that followed the death of those
PIONEERS and FOUNDERS of the THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY ( I will add
that of course that Col. Olcott was a founder and President for
life = see BLAVATSKY: Collected Works (TPH) Vol. I various
pages but the most important are between 121 - 129.
Best wishes,
Dallas

I did not take notes. However, at least a dozen people
who have come to
the New York Theosophical Society said, when we greeted them
after the
meeting, that they were told to leave meetings of the ULT for
asking the
wrong questions. Other than to defend the ULT as an organization
which
believes in presentation rather than innovation, I never pressed
for
details.

I never said that I was. And if the answer was so simple,
why did
nobody tell me the first time? Also, as the Theosophy Company
controls
the property, what keeps it from exercising authority over the
members
(real, not rhetorical, question)?
