Re: The Pineal Gland
Dear Friend:
Looking over the several references dealing with this subject I
was struck by the little that was said. From those I draw some
conclusions and hope these may be useful. I provide the
references so that these can be verified and cross-checked.
The "pineal gland" is little spoken of in Theosophical literature
beyond saying that it is related to WISDOM. It is also called
the Eye of Siva (the MAHA-YOGI and the Patron of all the Adepts)
[ S D I 358 457fn 459 II 282 613 ] As the "eye of the Dangma"
it means the "initiated" [ S D I 45, 218fn ]
Wisdom is defined as knowledge beneficently applied.
Wisdom is wholly impartial and impersonal, and is used when
there is, in the progress of general evolution, a complete
understanding of the purpose and the process of all that
EVOLUTION implies, down to the least of atoms or Monads, and also
including all humans and the greatest of the Universal laws. It
is used, finally, only when Karma requires or permits it. It has
to be UNIVERSAL for the reason that its use may not impair or
harm any of the Monads of lesser experience on their upward
respective "paths."
When this "Wisdom Eye" is used or applied, it is done when the
OPERATOR knows exactly the karmic nature of one (or, of the
cyclic situation) demanding and deserving its beneficent power.
It is never imposed, it is employed as a benevolent balm that
helps to adjust the confusion of understanding in another's' mind
and emotional nature.
It can never be used for evil or selfish purposes. It can never
be used to dominate or abridge the free-will of another.
Initiation in the SPIRITUAL SENSE, implies a full knowledge of
those characteristics, which alone permit the impartation of this
terrible secret. Incredible as it may seem, we all possess it,
locked up in the vault of our MONAD (Atma-Buddhi). The only way
to approach to it is through the disciplines outlined in
practical Theosophy. It is the inclinations, desires and
passions of our Lower self which keeps this knowledge at a
distance from us -- to understand, and to use,
These are not new ideas, but very ancient. They do not pertain
to the psychic world of desire. passion and selfishness, which
are our normal environment in the "here and now," but, they are
reserved very strictly and only for SPIRITUAL needs. These are
entirely controlled by Universal KARMA and the great law of
CYCLES. In other words only a Great Buddha would have the full
knowledge of and control of the "third eye." The "Pineal gland"
is only a material trace signifying that which we once had, and
lost. This process is traced in The SECRET DOCTRINE .
In other words it is not for the ignorant or the curious to
tamper with. The road to "WISDOM PURE" is long and arduous, and
in the process, the "war" between the "Higher" and the "Lower"
self is brought to a conclusion in favor of the Higher, the
Spiritual Self. The BHAGAVAD GITA allegorizes this age-old
struggle, and also provides guide-lines for us to escape from
that fray, and rise again to the level of SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT.
This is a "path" recommended to Arjuna, by his teacher Krishna,
and which he emphasizes throughout the Gita with the quality of
dispassion and an adoption of the attitude of "renunciation of
attachment to (hoped for) results."
As it (the Third Eye, Pineal Gland) has been alluded to,
references will be found on it in The SECRET DOCTRINE II pp.
294-301, 302, 306, -- it is connected with Karma and is said to
embrace infinity, and is the mirror of the soul -- as the "third
eye," it is now atrophied, and has retreated within the brain.
In ancient Hindu literature, it is called Siva's eye (see S D II
170, 548)
Apparently early man had and used in when he (we) were in a very
high state of spirituality at the beginning of the Evolutionary
period (when Spirit began its progressive descent into
"matter") -- in the 3 preliminary "Rounds" [ S D I 158-60, 200-2,
246-7, 259-60, ii 185-7 ] . Now everything having become
"material" it can only be regained by hard discipline and close
control of "impulse." (S D II 615). In other words the
"material" illusions have to be overcome and pure spiritual
vision (which is WISDOM) has to be regained. As this is done, we
raise the whole mass of manifested matter up to the nature and
stature and dignity of conscious "god-hood."
One may well ask why is it necessary for the Monad -- the ETERNAL
PILGRIM -- to "descend" from a Spiritual state into a form and
illusion-bound "material" condition. It is explained in The
SECRET DOCTRINE ( and in The OCEAN OF THEOSOPHY - by Mr. Judge)
that the Monads with great experience ( the Buddhas, Dhyan
Chohans, Christs and Mahatmas, etc...) voluntarily sacrifice
their "position" to serve Monads of a lower level of experience
and knowledge, and provide them, as a tutor would, the knowledge
and wisdom they need. [ see S D ii pp. 167-8, 254-5, S D I
572-4 ] In discussions with her students, H P B developed this
theme of the Divine Tutor resident within each human in the
TRANSACTIONS OF THE BLAVATSKY LODGE. Pp. 66-78; [ BLAVATSKY:
Collected Works (TPH) Vol. 10, pp 252 -264.]
As far as our Earth is concerned, as I se it, one need only turn
to The SECRET DOCTRINE Vol. I pp 207-210 to discover how a great
TUTOR has been designated to supervise and oversee all spiritual
developments on the Earth. This Being is called the GREAT
SACRIFICE. May we draw inspiration and encouragement from the
vision thus presented.
Best wishes,
Dallas

Subject: [bn-sd] The pineal gland?
A mental exercise , perhaps , utilizing the imagination.
John Muir , the naturalist , wrote (rough quoting) " It is always
dawn
somewhere on the Earth....."
Now , if we can imagine ourselves riding along with these
perpetualy
"dawning" rays the only changes we might perceive , it would seem
, would be
the changing geography below , and upon changing our view of
"being in"
"perpetual dawn" , would anything change (by way of observation)
[ this being
viewied on the part of the monad (essential nature)]?
How could we relate "perpetual dawn" to dreaming states (or is it
the waking
states)?
How could we relate "the pineal gland" to this
magining?( theosophically
speaking)
Are we "opening" through through the "tool" of imagination?
