Dear Friends:


There has been some controversy in the past as to the accuracy of
the teachings given in the THIRD VOLUME of the S.D. (1897) Some
say it is authentic H.P.B., others doubt that it was left
entirely un-edited in exactly her own words.

Why was the publication delayed for 8 years? S.D. I & II came
out in 1888. H.P.B. declared there that the 3rd Vol. was
"ready." And the 4th "almost so. The 3rd Vol. she said would
contain sketches of the Great Adepts and a review of their
teachings. The presentation in the 1897 issue of Vol. III does
not conform to that preview. It is said to have been compiled
from some MSS of articles that H.P.B. had in her desk drawers --
unpublished for various reasons.

Why do the contents (as outlined in S.D. Vols I and II) differ
from the scheme H.P.B. proclaimed in advance for Vol. III ?

Inasmuch as we do not have her MSS to check the printed version
by, we can only say that any inaccuracies that "editors" may have
inserted, can only be detected if one has a thorough knowledge of
the ORIGINAL TEACHINGS (as obtained without alteration from PRIME
SOURCES.)

The only problem with Vol. III of the S.D. is that it was
published (1897) but NOT EDITED by H.P.B. several years after
her death (1891). Some of the articles there were originally
written by H.P.B. , but apparently some unidentified "editing"
was then placed in and on them in the 6 year interval from the
death of H.P.B. in 1891 to the time this volume was issued.

So, I would say: Be wary. If you know what H.P.B. taught
through a thorough study of the ORIGINAL MESSAGE of THEOSOPHY
(not EDITED editions of her books and articles) you may well be
able to detect the variants.
