Dear Friend:

Thanks  I had not heard that “fool” was directed in the Orient specifically to the “PERSONALITY”

Perhaps in the DHAMMAPADA (5th canto) “Fool” is used to indicate the difference between a wise man and a thoughtless one.  But your surmise may be quite correct.

Indeed the “personality” can be a dangerous “fool” to many of us if it persists in deluding us as to the real goal of life.

As to darkness and light:  seems tome someone has to be able to see and distinguish between the two, Then there has to be a source of light, Then there has to be some kind of screen on which light falls so that it shows up as dim/light and the thousands of colors.  But, finally how can any science or wisdom be obtained from the simile ?  Where to use it?  But why was light originated?  What use is “darkness?”  Why is an intermediate illumination needed?

Might one not observe that our Earth’s proximity to the Sun has caused the sensitive receptors in our eyes to become less able to see in what we call darkness?

About a year or so ago astronomers using the Hubble telescope on a very minute section of the firmament near the North Polar segment, discovered the area to be paved with thousands of suns and galaxies hitherto not suspected.

This pushed back the supposed limits of the Universe to some 50 billion light-years -- a distance inconceivable and inexpressible. This leads me to speculate that we could view our present UNIVERSE as a vast SUN, and we lodged in some area inside, are not able to see this marvelous surrounding sun because we are blinded by our own SUN.   We need a physical instrument to make this clear to us.

Perhaps this has something to do with the idea that we are at the “CENTER” of our own perceptible UNIVERSE ?  What the true CENTER of the UNIVERSE, THE  CENTRAL SPIRITUAL SUN may be, is something different;  and probably relates to the idea of “the center that is everywhere, and the circumference which is nowhere.”  One might also look at the statement made that each MONAD mirrors every other Monad, and wonder if this vast integration is not well within our comprehension once that we have purified and perfected our personality?

In fact do we not have an analogy at hand?  The way in which our physical body is controlled and responded to bythe central intelligence that we are seems to indicate that for each department there is as corresponding CENTER which processes maintenance and only when an event exceeds that capacity is it relayed to the human Mind for adjustment and response?  How would a cell or an atom in our bodies view the central MIND-INTELLIGENCE that is ours -- if ithad the capacity to do so on the same level we (as a human mind) casually employ?

Is it possible that we actually live INSIDE the truth of all TRUTHS and fail to see it clearly because we are blinded by our own personal ideas ?

I recall many years ago an article entitled WE LIVE IN THE SUN.  This might be a clue.

Best wishes,

Dallas

Subject: just a side note.......

In many ancient Asiatic writings the "fool" is a term that is used quite
often to infer the lower self  , as I understand it, and I have never called
it anything different than that. Although the compassion of referring to the
"wanderings" of that lower self is presented in theosophic writings as having
not found ... good direction ie; Voice of the Silence and H.P.B.'s insistence
on the EXACTNESS of karmic Law, and that REAL knowledge could alleviate half
if not all the world's troubles. I agree completely that in a certain light "
fool "as a term may seem harsh and that to elevate the aim of the Soulis
"better" than any insistence on  the stupidity or ignorance of anyone in
general.
A thought arises that only on a dark background would any light be perceived.
Theosophy has always striven for " better ".
