February 6, 2001 Dear Bruce: As to your question on the DUGPAS -- I would say that the matter is complex because it refers to the eternal polarity of SPIRIT and MATTER. Metaphysically the re-creation of the UNIVERSE after the rest of Pralaya produces the UNIVERSAL MONAD. But the Monad is not only DUAL (spirit -- matter) it is TRIPLE since the ABSOLUTE represents the SOURCE and BASIS which penetrates both of these . In addition there is INTELLIGENCE (CONSCIOUSNESS) which is so to say at the mid point between these two poles (spirit - Matter) and therefore is able to perceive all their interactions. Thus we have actually the tetragrammaton consisting of ABSOLUTENESS and spirit -- mind -- matter. The divine 4.. I find one of the most comprehensive definitions of "black magic" in T. GLOSS p. 105-6 "one definition is "adept of black magic". As I understand it the difference between the WHITE and the BLACK Magic is the motive or aim of these polar opposites. The WHITE is that which is universal and impersonal in scope and those who adopt it tend to share all they have of information and experience with others, and as a RULE they make no one their VICTIMS or their PAWNS. They practice the laws relevant to universal brotherhood, because they see that all "creatures" are of the same base -- hence BROTHERHOOD best expresses their methods and motives. On the other hand you have the practice of selfishness and isolation -- the fact of universal sameness is taken advantage of to enslave others either physically or psychologically or mentally. The sense of pride leads to dominance and the practice of authority. It is best expressed by the phrase: "Me first." This latter process results ultimately in a condition called the "Death of the Soul" -- this you will find explained in the KEY TO THEOSOPHY 100, 130 158-9 160-1 169-70 166 176 198 212 In regard to a study of the dugpa/sorecerers/shamars/ black magicians/dugpas/etc. There are words of warning given in Theosophical Literature. Some of these are: H.P.B. LETTERS. TO A.P.Sinnett: p. 241; Mahatma. Letters: 40 42 49 133 232 272 284 294 297-8 337 369 522 462-3 484 S.D. I 156, 169; S.D. II 586; PATH Magazine I p. 382; Isis I 599; II 369 H.P.B. Articles (ULT) I 227, III 357-9, 361-3 TRANSACTIONS OF THE BLAVATSKY LODGE (ULT) p. 66 76-7 It is not a subject that one likes to dwell on, yet, one ought to know how Theosophy looks at the situation in terms of our m7 principles and the rest of Nature, which is also involved. The White Magician finds members among those who are the "creators,": and the "builders" of the universe as well as those who sacrifice their high positions (SD I 207-0210, 272-3) to teach mankind the arts and sciences as well as the cooperative laws as in KARMA, VIRTUE, PERFECTION and BROTHERHOOD.. Blavatsky's instructions for the Esoteric Section were only published in full in 1980 in the Collected Works. In a diagram, (vol.12 opp. pge 524) which was published previously in the so-called 3rd volume of the SD: Macrocosm and its 3, 7, or 10 centres of creative forces- she shows how the centres of the inner man (the microcosm) and the physical body are connected with exactness to the macrocosm. Two notes on the page are interest: "The physical organs are used only by Dugpas in Black Magic." and again "The Physical Body is no principle; it is entirely ignored, being used only in Black Magic." The subject of transplants is connected to this. I have seen other articles from time to time in TS magazines telling stories of the dead appearing to organ recipients, wanting their parts back. As the Greeks knew, the heart is the seat of the soul. Incidentally, HPB's use of the term "Dugpa" is wrong as I understand it. This particular sect were not -according to Tibetan scholars - Black Magicians. Does anyone know about this? -Bruce
