That made him a typical Englishman of his time. Also, he frequently
used nasty epithets as weapons against those who he felt had slighted
him. One reason for a lot of hatred in the TS against him was his feud
with then-Theosophist Dion Fortune (who later made up with him; in his
last decade, he had really mellowed out).
