On my system, I can click, inside the black message area, with my right mouse 
button, then click CLEAR BACKGROUND, but that may not work on all systems. 
It's also good for those annoying backgrounds which are probably a pretty 
color on the sender's system, but which are a dotted color on my system.

Another option is to click at the beginning of the message and drag to the 
end of the message. If you can't read it by this point, you can click EDIT 
and COPY, then paste it into WINDOWS NOTEPAD (START - PROGRAMS - ACCESSORIES 
- NOTEPAD) which should give you just the text (and some garbage to ignore).
