RE: DTB ON MATERIALISM = Theos-World Definitions

Dear Friends:

Theosophy states that there are 2 Egos in Man.

1. the Spiritual, Monadic which is the true immortal. It
consists of ATMA (Spirit), Buddhi (the stored Wisdom of
experience the gives DISCRIMINATION ) and 3. Manas the Higher
Mind or ratiocination, thought, will, memory, imagination and
LOGICAL thought. KEY 95 99 103-105 129-133

2. The Personal or Temporary Ego consisting of 1. the Lower
Manas or that aspect of the mind that is embraced by desire
(Kama), 2. the Vital Life-energy (Prana), 3. the ASTRAL BODY
or Linga sarira (Model Body) on which the... 4. the PHYSICAL
MOLECULES, CELLS, and other structures arrange themselves.

Every incarnation the Personal Ego (which lasts only a life-time)
is "created" by the Karmic affinities that were generated in the
past "lives" of the SPIRITUAL MONADIC Ego.

During our lives this embodied mind we use all the time is aware
of the Ideal and spiritual Mind-Self and feels an attraction to
it. When this is heeded and attended to (THE VOICE OF
CONSCIENCE) , then the "mortal" can be voluntarily and by strong
moral effort transformed into the IMMORTAL -- one with its
Spiritual Father the IMMORAL EGO (Atma-Buddhi-Manas). The active
practice of Brotherhood and mutual help and assistance forms the
first steps along this path.

There is a thread of connection -- CONSCIOUSNESS that always
unites the Spiritual with the Personal Ego during life: the
"sutratma" KEY 163 167-70.

That sense of SELF-IDENTITY that we all have, is derived from
the fact that each on us has his own EGOIC SINGLE CONSCIOUSNESS.
It is ONE and not several. It is the PERCEIVER and the WITNESS.
It strings together the memories of all experiences on any plane
and unites these in what we call "memory."

The MATERIALIST according to theosophy (see KEY TO THEOSOPHY by
HPB . pp. 118-9 126 43
does not store enough material for Devachanic meditation and
hence has little to add to the store-house of the Divine EGO
which uses that after-death state to mediate on the virtues and
aspirations of a noble character that are generated during life.

The problem with materialism is that it OBSERVES phenomena in all
departments of Nature and records those observations. It is
apparently INCAPABLE of deducing the CAUSES of the phenomena.

Example: what is ELECTRICITY, LIGHT, THOUGHT, FEELING, -- in all
cases we are given descriptions of their operations and not their
own creative and energic SELVES.

We are told how they work under definite chosen circumstance.
Science theorizes about their nature and names what it conceives
to be the ultimate divisions -- then later discovers that those
were not ultimate at all. As, for instance, the ATOM -- when
penetrated, it dissolves into CENTERS OF FORCE and MAGNETIC
ENTITIES IN CONSTANT MOTION -- Science says that this is
"perpetual motion, and that the life span of an Atom may be as
great as the Universe itself -- also, that it participates
endlessly in various combinations with other atoms over the span
of its existence. What are those "entities?" What are the laws
of those motions?"

NATURE ALREADY CONTAINS ALL.

Our MATERIAL Science seeks to discover the way in which Nature
works; to discover the laws of its operations in all
departments. From those observations it shapes THEORIES and
HYPOTHESES which are not always true, but are always tentative ==
designed to assist in understanding the ways in which phenomena
can be caused repetitively.

Our Science does not know and cannot yet measure the ASTRAL realm
of electro-magnetic force fields although it is now coming very
close to that. [ Bio-genetic and Morpho-genetic fields,
randomness, indeterminacy, string theory, etc... -- a notice made
of the fact that there are CAUSES which remain to be
identified.]

Thus the MEMORY of a life-time spent in materialism is "lost."
It has not generated any kind of "spiritual" or aspiratonal
causes for the EGO TO REVIEW AND MEDITATE ON.

I hope this will help. One ought to study the KEY as if gives
the full rationale of this matter.

Dorothy,

Not according to anything I have seen in the last 40 years of
Theosophical
study. The spiritual component of the human organism is the
permanent,
undying part that endures through this Manvantara. With the sole
exception of
certain sustained incarnational black magic activity, the soul is
the
enduring quality of a particular incarnation and always present
and
available. The fact that given personalities spend huge portions
of a
lifetime outward-turned does disconnect him for the Spiritual
self.
In terms of cosmic justice and evolution, that is what Karma and
Reincarnation is for.
