Dear Sharon:

Re: Precognition. (also called Clairaudience and Clairvoyance)

Dallas offers:

First lets look at the reason why this happens. Theosophy
teaches we are surrounded by an invisible world, on which our
physical material world and all its objects, including our bodies
are molded. This invisible world is infinitely sensitive to
every kind of force, be that emotional, mental or mere physical
actions and events. Everything is so recorded from the very
ancient past up to the present.

One of the qualities of this "astral matter" is that it records
(as tape-recorder, or a video-camera could) the quality of our
feelings, thoughts, and actions. It is said that our 'motives'
determine the quality (good or bad) of all we do as humans.

There is also in Nature a universal coordinating Law (called
Karma) which acts on all beings, either human or non-human. It a
Law which serves to keep the harmony and balance of Nature going
at all times, and it may be defined as the urge to cooperation,
interaction as needed, and therefore of Universal Brotherhood.
Some may dispute the universality and impersonality of this Law
because they see accidents and misfortunes, as well as sudden
access of 'fortune' which inexplicably descend on individuals,
families or nations. However, the doctrines about it state that
it is universal, impartial, ever active, and serves, primarily to
restore a dynamic harmony at any point of disturbance. There is
no way in which anyone an 'escape' it, and therefore it is better
for us to learn about it, and agree voluntarily to work with it.

You may object, saying this of our free-will. I would agree,
however we are already very much indebted to its exactitude and
impartiality for our present lives and current situation. A
moment's reflection will show that it operates everywhere, fairly
for all people and things. Our bodies for instance, perform the
work of digestion, blood circulation, breathing, repair and
maintenance all through the body without our paying the slightest
conscious attention to their many works and functions. We are in
effect like tenants in our bodies. Most of the time we 'take
charge,' w damage them, and the recuperative effort is then seen
to operate very much without our conscious assistance.

I offer this introduction in case you are not aware of these
important factors.

But these have to do with the occasional faculty of PRECOGNITION.
It implies that at some times, individuals who exercise the rare
faculty (either by natural, and occasional inclination, or, by
training) glimpses in the "astral light" some of the results of
past events which will logically produce certain future results.

This faculty as I say is recognized and said to be unusual at
this time of our evolution. But as we pass on, as a wave of
progress (I mean humanity as a whole, does this gradual
progressing) the faculty may become more widely pervasive and
reliable.

At present, being rare and usually untrained the perceptions we
think of as the future may prove to be fragmentary and vague.

Occasionally we are struck, or someone else is struck with very
strong precognition of danger. An inner intuition hammers at our
consciousness, either for ourselves or on behalf of another.
"Don't take that trip." "Don't go on that flight." "Take
another route." "Don't take the Titanic." "Slow down and stop,"
etc.... Many such cases come to mind as narrated or experienced.

Many cases of this kind have been recorded historically.

In Theosophical literature, Mme. Blavatsky mentions these cases
in ISIS UNVEILED and also she gives the rationale I have
summarized above. If you are interested in more sources I will
be glad to offer them to you for you to read and study on your
own.

Best wishes,

Dallas

PS: For instance, a reliable writer on Theosophical subjects,
Mr. W. Q. Judge, one of Mme. Blavatsky's direct and trusted
pupils, wrote a book named THE OCEAN OF THEOSOPHY. It is
relatively short (178 pages) but it gives a good summary of
Theosophical explanations and doctrine. In this book chapters 5,
11, 16 and 17 give information on the subject you seem interested
in. In THE KEY TO THEOSOPHY, Mme. Blavatsky gives the theory of
Karma, and the doctrines that apply in dealing with the "astral
light." The KEY is a short book that gives a student the
material on which Theosophy is based to be studied and learned.
It is extremely valuable.
