I believe that this gross misconception is due in large part to
the terrible terminology used by the early Theosophical writers.
The "lesser ego" (a rather misleading term all by itself) does
not unite with a "higher Ego" (another very misleading term)
at all.  There is no uniting, any more than we can ever unite
the mind with the physical body. They exist on different cosmic
planes and thus cannot be united. Rather what happens is
that we raise consciousness from the ego to the Ego and
focus awareness at that higher level.
