Blavatsky Definitely not a Satanist

the following is a post i made to SNETNEWS, posted here for posterity.

I read with some concern the portrait painted of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky
by David & Linda Elston. Especially the words - "That woman was a satanist
in the strongest sense of the word". I can only presume you have not read
any of her books, except maybe some pages of ISIS UNVEILED. Have you heard
of the Theosophical Society? The Society was founded by HPB with Colonel W.
'Steel' Olcott in 18 with the following 3 Objects:

1- To form a nucleus of the Universal Brotherhood of Humanity, withouth
distinction of race, creed, sex, caste or colour.

2 - To encourage the study of comparative religion, philosophy and science.

3 - To investigate unexplained laws of Nature, and the powers latent in the
human being.

The following article appeared in the 3rd quarter edition of 'The Voice'
and is a good summing up of the TS today:

'The major reason why the Theosophical Society was established, more than
one hundred years ago, was to combat the danger of religious superstition
on one hand, and materialism of science on the other. Many things have
changed since then. Is the theosophical message still relevant today? The
level of our knowledge has increased dramatically and science and
technology have transformed our lives and society. Yet, our basic human
problems remain essentially the same. The two dangers of the past have
assumed new forms; rising religious fundamentalism and commercialisation of
life.
The tasks of building the Universal Brotherhood and search for Truth,
remain as important as ever. Theosophy provides mechanisms through which
these tasks can be achieved. The study of different religious philosophies,
the investigation of laws of Nature and the bringing together of religion
and science allow us to get closer to Truth and build more meaningful
relationships with people. The basic theosophical technique is the unbiased
examination of ideas and concepts. Theosophy is based on understanding,
not on blind acceptance of any ideas. The focus on the ideas and teachings
allows us to examine them in a non-attached way, without bias against or
for the person presenting them. Such attitude requires two very important
things; to be open-minded and to use our power of discernment. It is a hard
balancing act. Theosophy provides us also with help in the form of basic
principles of Wisdom, examined and proven to be true by many generations
before us. these principles, tested by time, were put together in the form
of the synthesis of Knowledge, an internally consistent system known as the
Ageless Wisdom. It is important to notice that this system has an internal
structure, and is not merely an eclectic collection of ideas.
Theosophy can act as a guide for us, living in the modern world, and for
future generations. In order to do so, theosophy can not be static it must
evolve. It must be expressed in contemporary language, and new scientific
knowledge must be progressively incorporated into it. This new knowledge
will bring a deeper understanding and a richer interpretation of theosophy.
Yet, the basic principles will remain the same. they are ageless and will
not change. How can the new ideas be incorporated into theosophy? Firstly,
they should be critically examined, to see whether they are compatible with
theosophy or not. Not all of them will be compatible. Secondly, the
compatible ideas should be integrated within the theosophical system, not
just added as appendages. Finally, it is very important to keep the
theosophical message simple, but at the same time avoid the 'watering down'
of the message, creating a shallow version of theosophy. Such a diluted
version will not work. The world needs theosophy in its full potency.
Theosophy challanges us to remove our own biases, to develop right
perception and discernment, and to gneerate the enthusiasm necessary to put
it into practical use. Theosophy is not a theoretical system, it is a
practical philosophy of living. The vision of brotherhood requires removal
of excessive individualism, and creation of an attitude of service. Service
to humanity is the theosophical goal. It is unfortunate that so many New
Age groups have become organised along business lines and commercialised,
selling spiritual teachings like a commodity. We can not make the same
mistake. Our goal is the long term spiritual progress of humanity, not a
short term material improvement. We have a spiritual, bot a commercial
goal. the more spiritually oriented we become, the more respect and impact
on society we will have. We will become the guiding force of changes, and
that is what we have been called for'
(Tad Phillips, Adelaide Theosophical Society)

I hardly think this is a satanist talking - do you?

Namaste
