Dear Alan:
Thanks for the memories and the reminder. I wonder if young people
today have those experiences? Like eating one's fill in a great Indian
restaurant for less than a pound and talking one's soul out into the wee
hours of the morning. Like opening one's doors to anyone in need and
not getting robbed or beaten up. Like making lifetime friends. Like
making a difference.
All of what you describe.

I've had this debate quite often recently and was told that my problem
was I was trying to keep the past in a future that would not accept it.
Specifically, I was called a kind-hearted fool who was trying to live my
grandparents' virtues in a society that took me for whatever it could
get. I just can't forget that my grandfather, as compensation for
loyalty and hard work, was given the cottage he lived in until he died.
This is the paradox. The landowners were filthy rich and we were poor,
but we were looked after like family and we looked after them. We can't
go back, but can we call this stuff now forward?

I think it's great that your "plea" came the same week as I had decided
to insulate myself and care only about me.
Cheers
Annette
