Co-operation is needed in everything. Man is never alone, even when he is
occupied in solitary work he is surrounded by invisible co-workers. Many
are working in a seeming isolation, yet are participating in a great mutual
task. Co-workers are scattered around the world, but they are connected in
thought and spirit. Isolation is an illusion, but it can be very real and
a hard test.

There are many invisible bonds connecting people. Some are like fetters or
chains, holding one down, and they must be released. Such are karmic
debts, which must be paid as quickly as possible. Other bonds are the
links of co-operation, channels of giving and receiving, by them we
advance, learn and grow in spirit. There are other bonds, like the bond of
marriage and bonds of friendship and hatred. All these bonds of short or
long duration are necessary for us to be able to live and participate in
this complex world of relationships.

The chain of ascent is the sacred bond between a teacher and a pupil. It
is a chain because every teacher is also a pupil and every pupil is also a
teacher. Thus does one ascend, with the helping hand of those who have
more experience, and by giving a helping hand to those who have less
experience. This is a spiritual bond, based on love and trust, therefore
is it sacred and must be guarded with the greatest care. The destiny of
those who severe this bond is not to be envied. It is the saving thread,
without it the fall into the abyss is inevitable.

By this chain or network of connections evolution is forged. Evolution is
the working out of the will of God through His Plan. This Plan is known by
the Brothers of humanity, who have the mighty task of bringing it to
fruition on Earth. In this task humanity must co-operate, otherwise it
will be delayed for aeons. The problem is that humanity is still like
children in kindergarten, occupied with petty trivialities. We must grow
quickly and lose no time in useless quarrels and lightminded thoughts.
These times are great. New era is approaching and great is the opportunity.

The chain of ascent is the sacred bond to the higher Might. Be careful not
to do it harm. Every distortion of reality, every thoughtless word, every
malicious thought, breaks it down thread by thread. It is made stronger by
pure spiritual striving, which is the real effort to correct wrong
attitudes, seek right knowledge, broaden the consciousness and take an
active part in the world co-operation for the good of the whole.

In conclusion let me include a thought from the book Hierarchy of the Agni
Yoga series, which was my inspiration for the above:

“Merging into the waves of the Infinite, we may be compared to flowers torn
away by a storm. How shall we find ourselves transfigured in the ocean of
the Infinite? It would be unwise to send out a boat without a rudder. But
the Pilot is predestined and the creation of the heart will not be
precipitated into the abyss. Like milestones on a luminous path, the
Brothers of Humanity, ever-alert, are standing on guard, ready to lead the
traveller into the chain of ascent.
 Hierarchy is not coercion, it is the law of the world-structures. It is
not a threat but the call of the heart and a fiery admonition directing
towards the General Good.
 Thus let us cognize the Hierarchy of Light.”
