A woman once received a flowering plant as a gift. She wanted to act in
the best manner she possibly could with this gift, so she left it in a nice,
sunny spot, and kept it watered, even using one of those gadgets which state
when the plant needs watering. Yet, in spite of the care she gave to it, it
did not flourish; in fact, it was dying. She redoubled her efforts, but to
no avail, and the plant died.

Because the plant was a flowering cactus.

"Act in the best possible manner you can" only makes sense if you know
what the good is. And for that, you need to understand the laws by which the
universe works.
