HPB in VOICE OF THE SILENCE offers:

of mercy becomes an action in a deadly sin. ...

Shalt thou abstain from action ?  Not so shall gain thy soul her freedom.
To reach Nirvana, one must real Self-Knowledge, and Self-Knowledge is of
loving deeds the child."						p. 34-5


"Give light and comfort to the toiling pilgrim, and seek out him who knows
still less than thou;  who in his wretched desolation sits starving for the
bread of Wisdom and the bread which feeds the shadow, without a Teacher,
hope or consolation, and--let him hear the Law."			p. 40


"Lear that no efforts, not the smallest--whether in right or wrong
direction--can vanish from the world of causes.  E'en wasted smoke remains
not traceless.  "a harsh word uttered in past lives is not destroyed, but
ever comes again."

Seems to me that the idea of brotherliness in action is all inclusive and
apparently the only way to the Path of Wisdom.  There is no question in my
mind that when Karma presents us with an opportunity we should assist.

The Buddha is reputed to have said:  "Give even a little to him who begs."
in the Dhammapada.
